Columbia Shuswap – 2024 Community Service Award

Branch News |

At our June 5 annual picnic we presented the Community Service Award to Kayla Dixon of Kamloops.

Kayla attended South Kamloops Secondary School. She spent many years volunteering through her school and community organizations. Her exemplary volunteering included:

  • Member of the Mind Health Club, the Social Action Club and the Link Crew.
  • Noticing low involvement in her clubs, she created the SKSS Extracurricular Club to successfully increase student involvement in extracurriculars.
  • Co-president of school Future Business Leaders of America chapter, which competes in a Canada-wide business competition.
  • Dedicated volunteer in her community, including Kamloops Food Bank, United Church Pit stop and coaching Kamloops Waterski Clubs youth Rip ’N Ride.
  • Volunteer at the 2023 BC Winter Special Olympics, as well as the Kamloops Waterski Club Adaptive Clinics.
  • Took initiative to build three adaptive skis, coming up with the concept, engaging sponsors and completing the construction, allowing many disabled persons to enjoy the adaptive waterski sport.

Kayla was accompanied by her mother at the picnic. We were very fortunate that Provincial President Ros LeBlanc and Provincial Past President Rob Kikkert attended our picnic and did the presentations to Kayla. They presented Kayla with a book, a certificate and $1000, which was $500 from the Awards Program and $500 from Columbia Shuswap Branch.

It was a cold day for the picnic but was enjoyed by all the members. We would like to thank Ros and Rob for their attendance.
