Memoriams |

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of a well known and respected member of the

Fraser Valley Power Pioneers and BC Hydro Telecontrol –

Jay Stanley Sorenson

Mar. 24, 1944 – Sep. 26, 2024

Jay grew up in Matsqui Village through his early years and graduated from Abbotsford Senior Secondary School in 1962 and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in late 1962.  Jay was trained as an Airborn Radar Technician.

After Jay’s term was up, he left the Air Force and joined BC Hydro as a meter reader in 1967.  He attended BCIT Electronics Training at night school to upgrade his military training and spent his career at IMR (Kitchener Radio Shop) and later transferred to Atchelitz Substation until retirement in 2003.  Jay was well respected for his knowledge and craftmanship.  After his retirement, Jay re-joined BC Hydro as a Construction Contractor and Consultant, and served Hydro’s domain across the province.

Jay and Bonnie were also members of the BC Hydro Power Pioneers, Fraser Valley Branch.  Jay and Bonnie made a beautiful and generous contribution to the 2022 BC Hydro Power Pioneers Jamboree at Harrison Hot Springs – a beautiful antique Grandfather’s clock and a handmade carving by Bonnie.

Jay was actively involved in Abbotsford Minor Sports as Team Manager, Coach & District 8 Minor Coordinator for Softball BC.

Jay is survived by his spouse Bonnie (Denis) Sorenson, son Kevin (Nanci) and daughter Kirstie (Bruce) and many grandchildren.

With respect to Jay’s wishes, no formal service will be scheduled. As was his pragmatic style, he felt no pageantry required.  Jay’s obituary is online at Dignity Memorial and in the care of Woodlawn Mt. Cheam Funeral Home.  If you would like read Jay’s obituary, leave a message, or make a donation in Jay’s name please contact Dignity Memorial at :
