Even better, there were no ants or wasps, and the rain held off, to the delight of the 60 Power Pioneers who attended the Upper Island annual picnic at the Nanaimo Fish and Game Club.
The morning began at 10 a.m. with games of bocce and ladder bolo. Cash prizes were on the line so both games were hotly contested. First place bocce winners were Laverne Makortoff and Dave Gallie, with Jane Adkins and Al Akins a close second. Ladder bolo saw Marg and Bill DeHart emerge victorious, leaving Mary and Glen Canning to pick up second spot! All that exercise worked up an appetite for delicious barbequed salmon (rumoured to have slept in the ocean the night before), burgers, salads and cake! After all that food, it was tough to get everyone back on their feet for the famous Upper Island Bean Bag Baseball Series! It pains me to report the Men’s Team squeaked out a win! How the heck did that happen?Lucky winners of the super door prizes were Dianne Michaely, Shelly Hornby, Rose Ellen Brade, Linda Williams and Roger Movold.
