Nanaimo Youth Award winner Elena Sales and her Mom were invited to the Upper Island Power Pioneer annual picnic, 12 July, 2022.
Elena is from Kwalikum Secondary School in Qualicum Beach.

Elena is pursuing a career in Sciences at McGill University.
Some of Elena’s achievements:
-Elena volunteers to restore and protect the environment she loves. It all started when she backpacked to Cape Scott and found the environment littered with plastic, bottles, toys, fishing nets and more.
Elena spearheaded a “Zero-Waste” Initiative. She became Student Council President and applied for and secured a grant for composting bins. She partnered with the Regional District of Nanaimo for collection of the bins.
- Elena participates in community organizations to make changes happen.
- For 5 years has represented Echo Players and Qualicum Beach School of Dance. (Elena is one of the Principal dancers)
- Appointed “youth member on the select committee on sustainability” for the town of Qualicum Beach.
