On July 13, 2024 friends and family celebrated Ray Anderson’s 90th. birthday at Beban Park social center, Nanaimo, BC
Ray got his start at Peterson’s Electric in Vancouver in 1956 as a Labourer/Truck driver, then Blaster’s Helper. He worked for them about 5 years full time, then occasionally for a few years after that when other work was unavailable.
He applied and got on with BC Electric where his father had worked for many years. He stayed on when BC Electric became BC Hydro and in the mid 1950’s he transitioned to a position in North Vancouver helping to replace poles as a Driver/Helper on a high voltage transmission line.
This all eventually led into a full time position with BC Hydro in Stores in Vancouver in the late 1960’s, transferring when they moved Stores to Surrey where he worked until the early 1970’s.
In 1973 Ray moved his then young family, to Port Alberni and worked for BC Hydro in District Operations as a Material Handler and Driver/Helper. In 1977 he transferred to Generation and worked out the substation at the Alberni Paper Mill as well as the Ash River generating station as a Driver/Helper until his retirement in 1996.
In his career Ray is proud to have worked for four IBEW union locals in the province and recalls his time with BC Hydro and his many Co-workers fondly, he still maintains very close relationships with many of those people through his membership in the Power Pioneers which he joined shortly after his retirement. He always enjoys the various events when he can attend, the newsletters and of course the continued companionship and ability to reminisce with others who share similar memories.
